Kotuwa, Wanderlust Hotel

❤️❤️❤️

If you’re down to try Sri Lankan food but have no idea where to begin your gastronomic exploration, Kotuwa is a good starting point. Located in Wanderlust Hotel along Dickson road, the restaurant setting is unimaginable from the outside, which seems foretelling of the dishes it offers, in a good way of course.

Devilled Cashew ($8)
Lychee Achcharu ($8)

Had the Devilled Cashew and Lychee Achcharu as appetisers which were refreshing.

Wattakka Kalu Pol ($18) (Butternut squash in coconut curry)
Jaffna Duck Curry ($28)
Malu Baduma ($36) (Fried perch)

Of all the dishes, I really liked the Malu Baduma which is fried perch on top a sea of turmeric leaf curry. The curry is a little spicy and a little sour which was really refreshing! The pomelo seemed like a bit of an afterthought which was nice to have, but did not change the dish significantly.

Plain Hopper ($5)

For the uninitiated, the plain hopper can be eaten like a staple, so instead of white or yellow rice, you can pair the plain hopper with the dishes for a different experience.

Chicken Kottu ($26)

The Chicken Kottu was an interesting dish. It is essentially chopped roti stir fried with eggs and vegetables. If you may imagine, it’s like someone took a roll of popiah, chopped it and then stir fried it to make it fragrant. You can distinctively chew on the roti pieces because of its doughy texture.

Banana Blossom Puff ($16)

We thought this sounded interesting and indeed, eye opening it was. The make up of this puff is actually banana flower! Nothing too over the top in terms of taste.

The flavours at Kotuwa have been accustomed to the local palate according to the friendly wait staff, so if you’re hesitant about trying Sri Lankan food, I highly recommend trying Kotuwa if you wish to start somewhere.
