Edge Saturday Lunch Buffet, Pan Pacific Hotel

Go!!!

The Edge lunch buffets have always been one of my favourite buffets because of their sheer variety and good quality dishes. Pre-Covid-19, the place itself was a feast for the eyes; especially the dessert area where seasonal decorations (like Christmas 2017) are put up for the enjoyment of guests.

In this current Covid-19 climate, self-service buffets at the Edge are suspended. Instead, the food is individually plated and served to you upon order. For this reason, the buffet menu has been significantly streamlined from its former spread. That said, there was still a good spread of multi cultural dishes in the line up.

Theme: Makan Makan

Gorgeous pink hue in the middle
Roasted Lemongrass Chicken Thigh

Wok-fried Carrot Cake
Marinated Chicken Satay

Kueh Pie Tee
Cantonese delights: Char Siu, Roast Pork, Roast Duck

Edge Nonya Laksa
Dim Sum basket: Salted Egg Custard Bun, Siew Mai, Har Gao
Cheese Platter

Durian Pengat
Seri Kaya Kueh
Classic Crème Brulee

Here are my recommended MUST TRY dishes:

  • Cold prawns
  • Sashimi
  • Grilled Shoyu Beef Tenderloin
  • Lemongrass Chicken
  • Chicken Satay
  • Nonya Laksa
  • Grilled Sambal Fish
  • Mango Sago
  • Durian Pengat

Obviously I couldn’t have tried everything (I really wanted to try the Indian food and ice creams but I reached my limit for that day) but for those I tried and recommended above, I was rather impressed by some of the dishes. For instance, I was pleasantly surprised that the Shoyu Beef Tenderloin was cooked perfectly with its juices still flowing out as I sliced into it. The same can be said for the Lemongrass Chicken where the meat was just nicely cooked and the lemongrass fragrance was just right. I suspect they used sous vide for the chicken at least, in order to achieve such a good consistency for the chicken.

The other two attention catching dishes were the Chicken Satay and Grilled Sambal Fish. Never have I ever eaten a chicken satay as soft as this! It was really quite mind blowing. The grilled fish was also well executed; the sambal wasn’t too watery and the balance of spices was just right.

For the desserts, apart from the crowd favourite Durian Pengat, I was drawn to the Mango Sago for its thick, creamy like texture. Suffice to say that its flavour was bursting with every bite, thanks to the bits of pomelo and sago within.

As delightful as how the above dishes look and taste, all buffets have misses. Here are my recommended dishes to skip:

  • Kueh Pie Tee
  • Heritage Popiah
  • Mushroom Soup
  • Char Siu

My reason for skipping them is pretty much that they were mainly tasteless and you shouldn’t bother filling yourself up with them.

The Edge Weekend buffet is priced at $62++ per adult which seems a little hefty especially since they don’t offer fresh oysters in their seafood menu and the entire line up is significantly smaller in this Covid-19 world. However, they do make up for it by having a greater control of the food quality as well as better plating. Cold drinks like ice lemon tea and orange juice are included in the buffet, on top of coffee and TWG teas.

Makan Makan Lunch Buffet is available from now till 14 November 2020.
