C&R Cafe Restaurant, Chinatown London, UK

Go!!

Good and affordable Southeast Asian food is extremely hard to find in London (there are many in Chinatown but I can’t say for certainly that all of them are good; I’ve had terrible ones before). After multiple hopeful attempts only for it to come crumbling down, I’ve almost come to think that maybe London just isn’t the right place for it. Until I tried C&R Cafe Restaurant. Located in a tiny ally in Chinatown, this place is easily missed unless there’s a deliberate effort to look for it.

Teow Chow Stewed Pork Belly with Broccoli and Beancurd on Steamed White Rice, £9.50.

Gosh, the softness of the stewed pork belly was almost melt in your mouth standards! The braising sauce used was also extremely flavourful, and for a moment I felt I was in Singapore again.

Satay Mee Hoon, £9.50.

I was pleasantly surprised by the peanut sauce. Despite knowing how Londeners do not take to spicy food, C&R doesn’t hold it back for its peanut sauce. Big crunchy bits of peanuts in spicy sauce topped on vermicelli and seafood such as prawns and squid (no cockles and pork slices though) makes this dish a nice one to have when you’re craving for satay but don’t want to pay an exorbitant amount for starters. My only complain is that this dish came with more water than usual, and they used cucumbers instead of Kang Kong. Is this how they eat it in Malaysia?

Konloh Mee, £9.50.

Everyone knows that a good plate of konloh mee is in the sauce. I loved every single drop of sauce in this dish; it’s slightly spicy yet still retaining that black sauce flavour you would expect of Malaysian dry noodles. Needless to say, I savoured every single drop to the last bit.

Seafood Hor Fun, £9.50.

Another hit on the menu. Despite it’s pale looking appearance, the hor fun certainly had a lasting wok hei taste and the silky egg was done beautifully. Not the best hor fun I’ve ever eaten, but well done for London’s standards.

Watch out for this space; I’ll definitely be going back for more and can review the other dishes!
